Bonnie Martin Smotony Humphrey

Bonnie Humphrey (1932-2025) died peacefully on March 1, 2025. She was 92. She is survived by her sister, Pauline; her daughter, Treva; Treva’s husband, Mike; her five grandchildren: Brian, Kyle, Kevin, Scott, and Travis; and her eight great-children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; second husband, Neil; son, Mark, and 13 siblings.

After growing up in Oklahoma, Bonnie married Wayne Smotony in 1951 and started a family in California. Moving to Reno, Nevada, she started a career in university administration that spanned 5 decades in Nevada and California. She retired from the California university school system at Berkeley after attaining the title of Secretary to the Board of Regents. She was respected by all. Her retirement party was attended by some of the biggest names in California, including the governor.

After retirement she moved to Ogden, Utah to be close to her family. After her husband of 51 years died, she married Neil Humphrey and moved back to Reno, where she and Neil rekindled friendships with colleagues from her time at University of Nevada at Reno. After Neil’s death, she moved back to Ogden where she was actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of her great loves was attending family get togethers. Along with her stellar career, Bonnie was most proud of her Cherokee heritage. She was a great wife, great mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also the best mother-in-law ever.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hemmersmeier, Treeo Retirement Community and their staff, Jamie and Ariel with Simbii Hospice, for their excellent care of Bonnie.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Bonnie requests any donations be made to St. Joseph Church.
