We are saddened to announce the passing of Esmeralda Monique Alvarez Poulsen. She passed away on February 26, 2025 at Brigham Community Hospital.
Monique (for the majority of her life she preferred her middle name) was born in Bordeaux, France on March 30, 1947. She was the daughter of Emilio Alvarez-Mongil and Odile Dussom. She also had three brothers and five sisters. While in France, she excelled in school, eventually completing a degree in psychology at the University of Bordeaux. She moved to the United States in 1970 and married Orson Lee Poulsen. They had two daughters, Nicole Orianna Poulsen Page and Kristel Anne Poulsen Minnock. They divorced after 16 years of marriage. In the U.S., Monique went to school to complete nursing training, eventually becoming a registered nurse. She later joined the Army Reserve, serving as an Army nurse until she was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. As a nurse, Monique cared for all of her patients with kindness and compassion, and always with dignity. She worked at several hospitals during her career, including Brigham Community Hospital, Ogden Regional Hospital and Davis Hospital.
As a mother, Monique gave everything she could to her daughters, always making sure they had everything they needed, even if that meant she would go without. She also had a great love of classical music, Opera, and Ballet, and she took her daughters to the opera and theater whenever she could. Monique also had a particular love of dogs, especially the big ones, and always had a canine companion by her side throughout her life. Monique's other great love were her grandchildren, Arianna Mishel Allred (deceased), and Derek Florin Allred.
Her service will be held at Aaron's Mortuary in Brigham city, 888 S. Main, on Saturday, March 15, 2025 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. There will be no formal service, just drop in for food and remembrance. A Graveside Service will follow immediately after, at the Brigham City Cemetery, 300 E. 300 S.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer you to make donations to the Utah Humane Society.
