Eugenius "Gene" Gelhard

August 21, 1927 — November 13, 2016

Eugenius “Gene” Gelhard, 89, of Clearfield, Utah, passed away, Sunday November 13, 2016 at his home.  Eugenius was born on August 21, 1927 in Tomaszow, Poland to Johan and Wanda Gelhard.  On May 31, 1957 he married the love of his life Rosemarie Elisabeth Schwind in Worms, Germany. Together they had two beautiful children, Veronica and Raymond.

He served in the United States military in both the Army and Air Force. He retired in July of 1979 as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force as an Education and Training Superintendent.  He also worked for Utah Transit Authority as a Fare Box Collector. 

He belonged to the United Schutzhund Club of America, Olympus Schutzhund Club of Salt Lake City, and Wasatch Hundesport Schutzhund Club. During his many years as a dog trainer he became a Hall of Fame member for winning many titles with his German Shepards, Marko and Yasso. Over the years he trained many German Shepard dogs for the sport; Marko, Skipper, Niko, and Yasso.  Eugenius enjoyed dog training, traveling, skiing, dancing, and attending the Hof Festival in Ogden and the Oktoberfest at Snowbird.

Eugenius is survived by his son Raymond Gelhard (Shawna Gelhard) of Layton, Utah and his daughter, Veronica Smith of Lubbock, Texas; two granddaughters Savannah Gelhard and Emma Gelhard of Layton, Utah; his best friend, his dog, Yasso and his sister Edelgard Bechthold (Willy Bechthold and their family).  He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie Gelhard, his father Johan Gelhard, mother Wanda Gelhard and two brothers, Waldemar and Helmut Gelhard.

There will be no memorial services at the request of Eugenius.
