George John Gregory

Greg (George) John Gregory passed away on April 19, 2014, from a short illness. He was born on January 19, 1941, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father John Gregory (Vourakis), was born in Crete, Greece, and died in San Francisco, California in 1960. Greg's mother, Josephine Aguinaga-Hotis Gregory Mazas, was born in El Paso, Texas, and died in California in 1978. His step-father, Angelo Dionisios Mazas (Mazarakis) was born in Kephalonia, Greece and died in Albuquerque, in 1968. Greg is survived by his daughter Gayle McCarthy and husband Brian of California, two grandsons, Kevin and Aidan, and his son, Matthew, of Layton, Utah; his long-time partner and companion, Sandra Larsen of Utah; his three step-sisters: Angela (Angie) Kucherenko of California, Irene Eastham of Texas, and Connie Mazas of New Mexico; and five nieces and one nephew. Greg was known for his cinematography, which he began to learn as a television news cameraman for Station KOB, in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the 1960s. He worked on the film, Waldo Salt: A Screenwriter's Journey, which premiered in 1990. The documentary was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It was screened at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival and was subsequently aired on the PBS American Masters, series. He lent his cinematic skills to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and later made films for the United States Air Force where he won several prestigious awards for his educational and training films. He was also a passionate volunteer for the Mill Valley Film Festival.

A memorial is scheduled on Tuesday May 6, 2014 at 7pm the Church of the Nazarene, 455 Rosewood Lane, Layton, Utah. 801-544-8334. His family requests in lieu of flowers that donations made to the trust of Matthew Gregory at Wells Fargo Bank, 1435 No Hillfield Road, Layton Utah.
