Gladys Joy McArthur Belnap, 79, passed away Friday, June 1, 2012, in Washington Terrace from congestive heart failure. Joy, as she was known all her life, was born November 11, 1932, in Ogden to Leslie Gale McArthur and LaVern Hastings McArthur. She was educated in Ogden City schools, graduating from Ogden High School in 1950. She attended Weber College and was affiliated with Chanodo Sorority. She married Gordon Leslie Belnap on July 11, 1952, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were divorced June 3, 2003 after 50 years together.
Joy was a stenographer at the former Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield while her husband served with the Army in Korea. They resided in Salt Lake City for two years, then moved to California for three years, living in Walnut Creek and San Leandro. They returned in 1959 to Ogden. She worked for many years as company secretary for her husband's businesses.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life, Joy served in all auxiliary organizations, including as Relief Society president of the Ogden 74th (Forest Green) Ward and on the Relief Society boards of the Weber Heights and Burch Creek Stakes. She had been a faithful visiting teacher since 1959 and for many years worked with the Family Record Extraction Program of the Church. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, serving as recording secretary for Weber County Far South Company and in various positions with Camp Sego Lily Far South Center Company. She served as president of the Ogden Lady Lions Club and supported other charitable causes. Joy was actively involved in family history, serving as secretary and treasurer of the Belnap Family Organization for several decades. She enjoyed compiling family history albums for each of her children's families and writing the life stories of her Mormon Pioneer ancestors. She loved solving crossword puzzles, reading books, particularly British history and LDS Church books, and going on long drives with her husband.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Alan Leslie Belnap, and her sister, Marion L. Pine.
She is survived by her former husband Gordon, sons Steven A Belnap of Clearfield, Brian Lee (Karen) Belnap of Liberty, Brent Jay (Lorinda) Belnap of New York City, ten grandchildren: Michael, Melissa, Ryan, Rachael, David, Caroline, Christopher, Spencer, Rebecca, and Nathan Belnap, brother-in-law Joe C. Pine, Montgomery, Alabama, and many loving nieces and nephews.
The viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 6, at Aaron's (formerly Larkin and Sons) Mortuary, 496 24th Street, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m, and on Thursday, June 7, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Weber Heights Stake Center/Forest Green Ward, 1401 Country Hills Drive, in Ogden
