Gloria Ann Jensen-Sutton passed away at her home peacefully on July 4, 2024. Gloria was born to James (Jim) Andrew Jensen and Carol Dorothy Jensen (Crozier) on May 3, 1952. She was born on Treasure Island, known at the time as the Naval Damage Control School, off the San Francisco coast. Her family quickly settled back in Ogden, Utah where Gloria remained for most of her life. She excelled at school and loved the arts. She was known for her love of theater, drama, singing in the choir, and her overall positive attitude. She was a friend to all and was still close to many she went to school with. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1970 and went on to attend Weber State University and Westminster University, receiving a double bachelor’s degree in English and Social Work. She later attended the University of Utah, receiving her master’s degree in Social Work, becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
In 1972 Gloria married Michael (Mike) Sutton. They had two amazing children together. While they divorced many years ago, they remained close friends for the rest of their lives. They were known to have coffee together daily and take road trips to see family in the Southwest. They also loved to attend Third Friday Charity Bingo with the Matrons of Mayhem in Salt Lake City.
Gloria was a Social Worker and public servant for almost 50 years. She was an ardent champion and ally for underserved and vulnerable populations, both at work and in her personal life. She worked with every age group in need of services, from children via Child Protective Services, to victims and survivors of intimate partner violence, to vulnerable adults via Adult Protective Services and the Utah Ombudsman’s Office. Ensuring our most vulnerable populations were safe, well fed, thriving and treated with respect and dignity was not just her work, but her passion. Gloria kept her license and continued to help when called, long after retirement.
Gloria’s greatest joys in life were her children, family and friends, with art, music, reading and her love of Christ coming in a close second. She is survived by her children, Benjamin Sutton and Katie Sutton Tracy, and their spouses and children, and her faithful service dog, Aggie. She is also survived by her sister, Kate Hinchee, and her spouse, children and grandchildren, as well as her brother, Ted Jensen and his children and grandchildren. Gloria had the privilege of having and adoring a large extended family, though she never used that word. To her, family was family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Linda Trout.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19 at Brigham City Community Presbyterian Church, located at 122 East 300 South, Brigham City, Utah.
In lieu of flowers, or to pay your respects if you are unable to do so in person, please donate to a local charity supporting underserved or vulnerable populations. If you don’t have one, she would have recommended your local domestic violence shelter, Veteran’s organization or food bank.
