Helen Jean Chartrand
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away February 15, 2015. She was born June 20, 1935 to Clifford and Phebe Hale Giles in Duchesne, Utah.
Jean lived most of her life in the Ogden area and graduated from Weber High School.
She met her husband, George, on a blind date at Hill Air Force Base. They were married for over 60 years. She supported her family while George served in the Korean War; followed him to Griffith Air Force base in Rome, New York, and later came back to Utah. She often took her children on amazing transcontinental trips to be with family in Utah and Vermont. She and George built a cabin in the Uinta Mountains and loved spending time there with family and friends. She had many adventures playing horseshoes, snowmobiling, fishing and hiking there.
Jean loved her family unconditionally (especially her 3 brothers), and was very supportive of her children and grandchildren. One of her favorite things to do was to call family and friends on their birthday and sing her own rendition of the birthday song to them. She was a serious card player - didn't like to lose at anything, and loved to quilt.
She worked serving hot lunch first for elementary school students, and later at the Defense Depot. Her next career was working for Pykettes stores in Salt Lake and Ogden, where she retired after 18 years as a sales manager.
She had a gritty, can-do attitude that she passed on to her children. She loved to travel and spend time with her 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She enjoyed many family trips to Europe, New England and Hawaii.
Jean attended St Josephâs and St Maryâs Catholic Church.
She is survived by children, Lewis (Pat) Chartrand of Kona, Hawaii; Kathy (Scott) Doxey of Ogden; Kent (Diane) Chartrand of Salt Lake City; grandchildren, Nathan Doxey, Travis Doxey, Lacy Moceika, Kelsey Chartrand; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ned Giles.
She is preceded in death by parents, Rev. Frank Giles, Fred Giles and her husband George Chartrand.
