Phil quietly left this world on his final flight on April 10, 2013 at the age of 90. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 17, 1922. He attended college at the University of Iowa, working towards an engineering degree. At the onset of WWII , he voluntarily enlisted in the US Navy and attended flight school. He was stationed in the Pacific during the war aboard the USS Saginaw flying TBF aircraft in support of Navy operations. After the war, he remained in the Naval Reserve, retiring with 20 years of service, and attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. During this time he was instrumental in the development of new helmets that were used by the Mercury 7 astronauts. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he worked in marketing and sales for Jensen Tool Company. He and his wife, Jane Wood, enjoyed their retirement in Arizona and spending time traveling overseas to visit their son and grandchildren. His wife, Jane, preceded him in death in 2000 after 55 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Peter and wife, Lynn of Hooper, UT; 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His family wishes to thank the employees at Aspen Care Center in Ogden for their care and special attention in making Phil's final years as comfortable as possible
