Howard N “Bud” Clark of Roy, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018 of natural causes. He was born on August 12, 1938 in Burtrum, Minnesota. He was the 5th of Harry and Dorace Clark’s 10 children. He graduated from Little Falls High School. He joined the US Navy in 1956 and proudly served for 3 years.
In October of 1958 He married Dian Beard. Together they had 4 children, Holly, Dory, Matt & Gene. Bud’s children and grandchildren were his greatest joy in life. He was extremely proud of all of them and loved them unconditionally. Bud and Dian divorced, but remained friends until her death in 2017. In 1981 he married Elizabeth “Libby” Hagerman. They also divorced, but had reconciled and were together at the time of his death.
He had a 33 year career with Greyhound Corporation, working as a driver, an instructor, and serving as Union Steward. Bud loved the opportunity to meet new people that driving offered. He loved telling funny stories about his family to his captive audience. He would even bring passengers home with him if they were down on their luck and needed a place to stay for a day, a week, a month, or in one case a couple of years. After spending one Thanksgiving away from home and eating dinner from a vending machine, Bud made sure that any driver stuck in Boise, Idaho on a holiday had a place at the family table. He cut a piece of plywood to fit up to the dining table and put saw horses under it as a table extension so there would be room for everyone to sit together. Once the table cloths were on, it was lovely.
Bud was a lifelong outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. In recent years, he especially loved elk hunting with his sons and sturgeon fishing with his son-in-law Scott.
Bud loved to travel and see new places. After his retirement from Greyhound, he and Libby traveled to Ireland, Scotland, and all over the US including Alaska and Hawaii.
Bud had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. Many nights, he sang his children to sleep. At family gatherings, all the kids in the extended family would sit in a circle chanting “we want daddy (or Buddy) we want daddy, we want daddy to sing us a song.” He would always oblige. For the last several years, he has shared his voice with his church family as a member of the choir at Community United Methodist Church, in Washington Terrace (South Ogden).
Bud had a deep and abiding faith in God and true heart for Jesus. He was very generous with his time, talent, and treasure. He often bought groceries and necessities for less fortunate people. Being an excellent cook, he often volunteered to cook for funeral dinners or other occasions at church. He was always firing up his smoker to smoke some kind of meat for his church family or other friends. His favorite secret ingredient was nutmeg. He always said just a hint of it, made certain foods taste extra special. He made braided rugs and donated them for auctions. He volunteered for many committees and projects at church including traveling to Colorado to help with flood relief. He also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, local homeless shelters and soup kitchens. He joyfully helped any way he could.
Bud is survived by the love of his life, Libby Clark. His children: Holly Hutchison (Kim) of Enterprise, OR, Dorace Mantz (Scott) of Meridian, ID, Matthew Clark (Dixie Willoughby) of Vacaville, CA, Maurace Clark (Kathy) of Coupeville, WA. Grandchildren: Brandy and Katrina Hutchison, Kathryn and Amber McBaine, Melissa and Zachary Clark, Barbara, Jody and Julie Clark, and David Mack. Great grandchildren: Camron Holmberg and Shane Clark. He is also survived by his sisters: Grace Sigford-Sharratt (Bob), Patricia Jackson, (Ed) Gwen Carlson, and Carol Wadell (Stan Williams) Candy Driggers, his brothers: Harlan Clark (Marlene) and Herbert Clark (Kay). He’s also survived by many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and his sweet little Yorkshire terrier, Jazzi. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Harriet Czech and Florence Clark.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday May 19th at 4 pm at Community United Methodist Church, 163 W 4800 S, Washington Terrace, UT 84405. Bud’s church family has lovingly offered to provide a meal following the service for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to your local food bank would be a lovely way to honor Bud.
