I Carl Koons

d. September 30, 2015

Pastor I. Carl Koons died at home Wednesday, surrounded by his family and cared for by the love of his life, his wife Audrey.

Carl served as a minister of the Church of the Nazarene for most of his life. He wanted to be remembered most as a caring and compassionate person whose ministry was a blessing to all he served. If his parishioners were hurting, he was hurting, and he worked hard to build every congregation he served.

He love all his family. He often said the greatest gift God ever gave him was his dear wife and his four loving children.

Carl was born in Los Angeles, Ca., to Ira Carl Koons Sr., and Ernestine Nogales Koons. He was reared in Santa Monica, Ca., graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1951 and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Audrey Working on Aug. 28, 1955. He and Audrey just celebrated 60 years of being in love.

Carl graduated from Pasadena Nazarene College in 1964 and entered the ministry of the Church of the Nazarene. He pastored for 33 years, first in Fort Bragg, Ca., followed by Virginia, Minn., Livingston and Laurel, Mont., and Ogden and Vernal, Utah. He also served as an associate minister in Ely, Nev.

Carl was also proud of the decades he spent substitute teaching, both while a minister and after. He said teaching gave him a chance to develop a relationship with many students over the years.

Carl is survived by Audrey and his four children: Kevin Koons (Anne Hagopian), Debbie Shatto (Jay), Carla Trentelman (Charles) and Sandy Jaramillo (Dave). He has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl.

A memorial service to remember and celebrate Carl’s life will be held Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake Central Church of the Nazarene, 1076 W. Indiana Ave., Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, Carl requested donations be made to Nazarene World Missions or to the Gideons.
