Irven H Moncrief

July 12, 1926 — March 30, 2016

Always proud of his Scottish roots, Dr. Irven H. Moncrief passed peacefully on March 30, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family.  Born July 12, 1926 to Lester and Lenora Kuhnhausen Moncrief in Warwick, Washington, Irv had a twin brother Ellis and younger brother Lester Jr.

Irv’s Father was a forest ranger, which made for an adventurous childhood living in various forests in the Northwest.  The family moved to Ogden when his dad was promoted to Regional Forester for the US Forest Service.  Irv graduated from Ogden High School in 1944 where he was Cadet Colonel in ROTC.  He joined the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor as hospital corpsman.  Returning from war, he married Susie Clements and they raised seven children: Gregory Moncrief (deceased), Geoffrey Moncrief, Heidi (Bill) Portz, Irven (Bill Newcomb) Moncrief, Heather (Al) Cadinha, Suzette (Eldon) Jensen, and Shannon (Michelle Hansen) Palmer.

He received his undergraduate degree from Weber State University. After graduating from U of U Medical School in 1954, the family moved to Ogden, where he was a Resident at the old Dee Hospital and was a staff member at the Dee and St. Benedict’s Hospital.

During his practice, he took care of the Monks at the monastery, local priests and nuns, and provided health care for people even when they could not pay.

Irv was a member of the Weber County Sheriff’s Posse, Mount Ogden Ski Club, Ogden Surgical Society,  Weber County Medical Society and served as the Weber County Health Director. He aided in search and rescue for Weber County when scuba divers and mounted posse were needed.  For many years he served on Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo committee where his favorite job was judging the Rodeo Queen Contest.

Irv was a “Renaissance Man” with his many well-developed talents and hobbies over the years…artist, chef, photographer, pianist, skier, fisherman, scuba diver and western cavalero.

In 1970, he relocated to Pleasanton, CA , opened  a private practice and met his wife of 37 years, Jean Gottschalk.  There they spent 15 years pulling their trailer to the Sierras, Monterey, Carmel, Napa Valley, Mendocino, and other regions of the bay area.  They retired to Sedona, AZ, where they spent their time camping, traveling abroad, and throwing parties for their many friends for the next 21 years.

Irv and Jean moved back to Ogden a year and a half ago to be close to his family.  They have enjoyed many happy family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Moncrief; six of his seven children;  two stepchildren, Lori Curfman and Dave Gottschalk; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Community United Methodist Church, 163 West 4800 South, Ogden, Utah, 84405, on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11:00 AM followed by a light lunch.  He will be laid to rest at Leavitt’s Aultorest Memorial Park on 36th St in Ogden.

Guests may greet the family on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the church.
