Ogden, Utah – 1937-2024
J Newell Nelson passed away on the 11th day of November 2024. He was born August 23, 1936, the son of Marvin William Nelson and Rosa Marie John Nelson in Brigham City, Utah.
He attended Lincoln Elementary, Box Elder Junior High School and Box Elder High School and Weber College.
He was a Land Surveyor all of his working years, which he loved. He also worked for Lindquist Mortuary. He was a true outdoor man, loved to fish, hunt and taught many to fish. He taught himself to play the Trombone and was first chair in his school orchestras. He was a self-taught artist having many awards for his detailed and beautiful paintings. He was especially proud of his Dolly Varen Big Fish Paintings on a Mural he painted along the Ogden River at the Ogden Rodeo Grounds. He was a devoted father to his entire family and considered all of them his greatest joys. He was a member of the LDS church and held many callings.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edwina “Jo” Berryman Nelson, four sons and two daughters. They are John Nelson, Scott Nelson, Mike Nelson, (Mary Deceased), Robert Nelson, Susan Bistline (Bruce), and Leisa D. Nelson, one brother Gary W. Nelson (Kathy), many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Raulon (Smiley) Nelson and one grandson Jusin Neal Nelson.
He was a veteran who passed away on Veteran’s Day. Many Thanks to all of the wonderful caregivers at the SLC, UT, VA and the George E. Wahlen VA home in Ogden, Utah!

A celebration of his life will be held for family and friends at the George E. Wahlen Veteran’s Home, 1102- 12th Street, Ogden, UT from 4 to 6 PM in the auditorium on Saturday November 16, 2024.
