Johnnie Boyd Winter 81, decided, on his terms, to be done with a long fight with lung disease. He entered this beautiful life on November 27, 1934 in Shoshone, Idaho to William Anthony Winter and Flora Dell (Myers) Winter. His life adventures had him residing in several of the western states, his military service stationed him in Hawaii and he proudly talk about his work as a truck driver taking him to all 48 mainland states.
As the seventh of eight children living a homesteaders life in the gorgeous valley of Stanley, ID Johnnie would say “if you were headed to the outhouse in the dead of winter, you should wait for a few of your siblings to go out first, then the seat will not be so cold.” This is proof of his wisdom beyond his years and his sense of humor.
Johnnie bravely followed in all his brother’s footsteps by joining the United States Navy in 1953 and served during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1957. He married Sylvia Reiswig of Newport, Oregon on his 20th birthday in 1954, he said “that way I would never forget my anniversary.” As a true example of for better or worse and in sickness and in health, he honored those vows for 59 years before being a widow.
Johnnie and Sylvia raised four amazing sons, he was the kind of father that made each of his children feel like the favorite. His pride bounded out of him when he talked about “his boys”. He is survived by his youngest brother Don Winter, and his boys: Gordon (Clarisa) Winter, John (Anne-Marie) Winter, Melvin (Shelly) Winter and Drake (Kris) Winter. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He had a special place in the hearts of his nieces and nephews, many of them had weekly conversations were they received his wisdom and support throughout his life and theirs.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the excellent and compassionate care he received from the nurses and doctors at Ogden Regional Medical Center.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Aaron’s Mortuary in Clearfield, UT. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Clinton City Cemetery.
