Kathy Ann (Nielson) Burt

9/21/47 - 6/25/17

Kathy Ann was an incomparable loving mother, but foremost a strong woman. She was the rock of our family and we will be unsteady without her for a time, but she taught us well, and we will be able to form our own foundations because her example. She loved teaching children and sharing her gift of art.  After her children were grown she continued to spread her love to the children of the community.  As the Librarian at Mar-Lon Hills Elementary, in South Ogden Utah, she would receive smiles and hugs from young people everywhere she went.  In this modern world of electronics, she often preached the power and benefit of holding a picture book and reading aloud to a child.  Each of her children carried this gift and the love of books and reading to their families.

Her grandchildren knew her as “Grandma Bobbie” and they brought her pride and joy beyond words.  In the final years they filled her thoughts and prayers daily.  She was active in her LDS church ward and positively influenced many young women and adults in her various service duties. Belonging to the “Daughters of the Utah Pioneers” helped maintain her lifelong love of learning and personal family history. She always took on tasks with a mindset of teaching new ways of looking at the world or simply adding to its beauty. Everything she touched carried her endless imagination and creativity.  She spent tireless hours making props and costumes for dramatic Road Shows, designing Christmas trees for the festival of trees and was the visionary behind an imaginative South Ogden Days parade float.  She was the first (and only) South Ogden Woman of the Year, but was so humble that she sneaked into the back of the award ceremony to see which of her peers would be recognized, never considering that it would be herself. She made her mark on the world in a fashion that we should all aspire to, which was to put people and relationships before any temporal need or desire.  She leaves a legacy of love.

Born in Tooele, Ut and grew up in Midvale, Ut where she developed lifelong friendships with Tisha (Leatherwood) Graham and Coleen (Carrigan) Holt whom she met in the 5th grade. Graduated from Hillcrest High in 1966 where she was a loved friend and leader among her peers.  Kathy was married to David R. Burt from 1970 to 1994 and remained friends until the end of her life.  They raised and loved four children in South Ogden, UT.

Kathy Ann took 69 short trips around the Sun and for those of us who shared part of that journey we can still feel her light. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Reed Nielson and her sister, Karyn Johnson. She leaves behind her mother, Marian Roberts Nielson, her sisters, Debbie (Dennis) Brimhall and Diana Caldwell; Her four children, Todd (Kristine) Burt, Cami Snow, Lindsay (Cindy) Burt, and Summer (Brian) Heath, and eleven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
