Kenneth S. Reed, 100, of Clearfield, Utah, died October 18, 2016 at his home.
He was born March 15, 1916 in Clearfield, Utah, the second of six children born to George and Irene Hatch Reed. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Hawley, Max, Marjorie and Robert. Still living is his sister Irene Murray.
He was a farm kid who spent many years thinning beets. He always credited this work as a major factor in his good health and long life.
As a young man he excelled in sports. He participated in track, baseball and basketball at Davis High and was quarterback for the Darts football team. He went on to become quarterback at Weber Academy, which years later became Weber State University. He had a reputation among his peers for being a great baseball player, playing shortstop on many championship teams. He also coached a winning youth baseball team which took state in the American Legion Program. In his 40’s, he seriously took up golf. He loved the game but often lamented it was the only sport he never mastered. The golf gods granted him a hole-in-one at the Roy Royal Greens course.
In WWII, he served in the Navy on a blimp crew that patrolled the Pacific Coast. He loved his years in the Navy and was always proud to be an American.
He married Shirley Bedford on May 29, 1947. That marriage was later solomized in the Ogden Temple. They had four children: Sherry, Craig, Cynthia (deceased) and Daren. Shirley died January 24, 1990 from leukemia. On April 29, 1995 he married Hazel Cooper in the Ogden Temple. They particularly enjoyed dancing at church dances. Hazel died February 2, 2008.
He was employed at Smith Canning Factory, the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot and Hill Air Force Base.
He served faithfully in many positions in the Clearfield 6th Ward and later in the Clearfield 4th Ward. He most showed his faith through numerous charitable deed for others He truly was a modern-day Good Samaritan.
Cheering for BYU, avoiding bogeys on the golf course, riding spirited horses, watching a good Western, beautifying his yard, laughing with good friends….these were among his great joys. He will be deeply missed by his family.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, 2016 at 11 am at Aaron’s Mortuary, 1050 S State Street, Clearfield, Utah. Friends may visit with family from 9:30 to 10:30 am prior to services. Interment In the Clearfield City Cemetery.
