OGDEN - Malcolm Holt, age 87, passed away in a Salt Lake City hospital surrounded by family and friends. He had been struggling with declining health and then suffered a fall. While he was a quiet, reserved man, he will be remembered for his sharp, dry humor, story telling, and kindness. He will also be remembered for his adventurous spirit who liked to travel and take on many hobbies. He found a kindred spirit in Luann, his wife of 53 years. They were sealed in the Ogden Temple for time and all eternity on May 23, 2002. She passed away in 2009.
Malcolm was born August 31, 1928 in Newton, Massachusetts to Malcolm and Emily Holt. He was the middle child to younger brother, David and older sister, Barbara. He grew up in a three-story home that housed three generations. He fished in the same ponds in summer that he ice-skated on in winter. Mal loved the ocean and clam chowder. His friends and he took buses into Boston to watch the Celtics and Red Sox. He played football in high school and became life long fan of the Chicago Bears.
Mal left high school to join the Army-Air Force at 16 in 1944. He was so skillful as a student in Morse Code technical school that he became an instructor upon completion his training. He was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi for his entire enlistment. Mal returned to New England and completed High School. He finished two years of college. For two summers he hitchhiked out West to work for the Forest Service near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Mal met Luann when she visited her sister in Jackson. Luann’s sister, Glorya, was married to the forest ranger, Bob Safran, who hired Mal and Luann’s brother, Calvin. Mal and Luann married in 1956. He moved to Salt Lake City and worked as a draftsman at EIMCO for two years. There he met Wat Misaka and both became life long friends. Mal returned to college and completed a forestry degree from Utah State.
Mal worked for the Forest Service for 30 years. He served on Teton National Forest, Boise National Forest, Bridger-Teton National Forest, and ended his career at the Regional Office in Ogden. He loved being a forest ranger and became an avid hiker and backpacker. The Wind Rivers Mountain Range was his favorite. In their retirement, Mal and Luann RV’d to Alaska, to the Arctic Circle, to Nova Scotia, Mexico, and all over the United States.
Malcolm is survived by his sister, Barbara Nelson, of Salt Lake City, Utah; his daughter, Cindy Caton, of Syracuse, Utah; his son, Brian (Kristin) Holt, of Ogden, Utah; his step-daughter, Karlua (Thomas) Giguere, of Miami, Florida; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
The family expresses its thanks to the staff and residents of Gardens Assisted Living in Ogden for their service and friendship.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the Lorin Farr 3rd Ward Chapel, 1570 East 1300 South in Ogden. There will be a visitation at 10:00 am one hour prior to the funeral. There is also a visitation at the same chapel between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, Friday, February 19, 2016.
