Marjorie King Hilton

Marjorie King Hilton, age 89, died February 7, 2014 in Ogden, Utah. She was born on March 31, 1924 to Olive and Earl Rush King in Detroit, Michigan. Marjorie was a strong and courageous woman who believed in social justice and worked tirelessly for civil and women's rights and to promote education and the arts.

She was adventurous, traveling to other countries and camping solo across the U.S. in her campervan. She lived a long, full and energetic life. Marjorie earned her B.A. at Denison College in Ohio and her M.A. degree at Ohio State University. She was a brilliant student and was extremely well read. As a child, she traveled and performed in Vaudeville, helping to support her parents through the depression.

She began formal education in the fourth grade and never lost her joy for learning. In her adult life, she held various jobs, most important of which was raising her five children. She worked for The Cleveland Clinic, The National Cathedral in Washington D.C., Planned Parenthood of Utah, the Hilton Hotel, and the Weber County Library. She was also a professional actress who performed in movies and stage plays throughout her life. Marjorie held volunteer jobs with the League of Women Voters, the Egyptian Theater in Ogden, Weber State Summer Theater Program and Ogden Regional Medical Center.

Marjorie is survived by her husband of 44 years, Clifford Hilton of Ogden, Utah. Her son, Andrew Johnson, predeceased her in 2005.

Her memory will live on in her children, Mark Johnson of NYC (wife Nina Mende); Scott Johnson of Tunis, Tunisia (wife Douja); her daughter Susan Johnson of Colorado Springs (husband Ted Grubb); and daughter Jennie Caverley of Ada, Michigan. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Ben Newman, Ines Johnson, Sarah and Zach Caverley and Katie Grubb.

The family requests that donations be made in honor of Marjorie to Planned Parenthood of Utah or Weber County Library. An informal service will be held on May 3, 2014 at the Ogden Valley Branch Library at 11 a.m.
