Matthew Callahan, II

February 10, 1977 — October 22, 2015

Matthew Callahan II, "Little Matt", 38, of West Valley City, passed away October 22nd 2015 after a long struggle with addiction. He was born in Salt Lake City, UT on February 10th 1977 to Matthew Callahan Sr. and Melanie Symes.

Matt graduated from Weber Basin Job Corps in 1995, where he was certified as a welder. He was a tremendously skilled welder, until an unfortunate accident caused a major injury to his knee. Soon after, Matt became addicted to prescription drugs. For the remainder of his life he battled this addiction. He ultimately lost the fight, and it caused his death.

Those who knew Matt, knew him as the master of the tall tale. Those tall tales were almost certainly recognizable by his trademark cockeyed grin. Matt was a very talented drummer, and loved to make noise. He loved all things outdoors, and his Rottweiler, Thor. He loved his family, especially his sister Jessica and niece Abby.

Matt is survived by his sister, Jessica Winn, and niece, Abigayle Winn (SLC, UT), his son Brenden Coli (Provo, Ut), step-brother, Jason Jones (Orem, UT), Half sister, Sarah (Boyd) Simkins, (Layton, Ut) Uncle, David (Shawna) Symes, (Farr West, UT); Uncle, William Callahan (Orfino, ID), Aunt, Kim (David) Gallegoes (Orofino, ID), and numerous cousins.

Preceded in death by his father, Matthew, mother, Melanie, step-mother, Debbie Walters, Grandmother, (whom he and his sister were raised by after their parents passing) Lucille Callahan, Grandfather, William Callahan, along with several aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, Matt's sister, Jessica, has requested that donations be made to an addict recovery program of your choice in Matt's name. The best way we can honor Matt, is to help someone receive the help he didn't.
