Norma Lucile Jones Hansen
Our dearest mother, Norma, passed away on the evening of December 14, 2015 in Brigham City, UT. She was 93 years old. She was born at home in Ogden, UT on December 16, 1921 to her parents Fred B. Jones and Edna L. Davidson Jones, she was their only child.
Norma received her early education in California and Ogden, UT where she graduated from Ogden High School in 1939. She went on to receive her RN diploma from the Thomas D. Dee School of Nursing in 1944.
She met Willard Clayton Hansen at a party at a friend’s home. Her first date was a drive up Ogden canyon and then taking an airplane flight over the valley. While Willard was home on a 10-day leave from the Navy they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 8, 1943. Willard passed away on March 7, 1975.
Norma went on to receive her BS and MS in Nursing from the University of Utah and her PhD in Philosophy also from the University of Utah. She started her nursing career as a private duty nurse, going on to be the head nurse in the Emergency Room at the old Dee Memorial Hospital She continued as a supervisor at the McKay Dee Hospital for many years. Later she had the opportunity to teach nursing at what is now known as Weber State University. Mother was a nurse first and a world traveler second. She spent extended time in the Middle East, especially Cairo Egypt and Jerusalem Israel, with Project Hope. She loved helping and teaching the love of nursing everywhere she went. She was always ready and eager to go anywhere at any time. She sailed all the great rivers of the world and cruised all of the oceans. She explored countless cities and countries with New Zealand being her favorite.
Mother was an active member of the LDS church and enjoyed being a visiting teacher. She was a supporter of Weber State University athletics, being a season ticket holder to all basketball and football games since 1962. She rarely missed a game and was their most enthusiastic fan and loved to keep her own stats.
Norma was involved in DUP, Altrusa, Women’s Legislative Council, Ladies of Elks, Child Culture Club, and she was involved in the district, state, and national nurses’ association.
Her favorite activities were reading, travel, bridge, and breeding Bosten Terrier puppies who were her faithful companions.
She is survived by her children, David (Glenna) Hansen of Kaysville, UT, Susan (Chuck) Johnson of Perry, UT, Roger F(Debbie) Hansen of Ogden, UT, Kristin (Mark) Grave of Kent, WA, and Shawn (Lynn) Hansen of Layton, UT. She has 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one sister-in-law, Margaret Hansen of Salt Lake City, UT.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and great-grandson.
The family appreciates and thanks Dr John Markeson, Michelle, Wendy, Nicolle, and the staff at Country Lane Assisted Living for all their loving care. She will be dearly missed.
Per Norma’s request, a Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 11 am at the Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden.
