Rudolf (Dolf) Albert Mensink, age 87, passed away peacefully November 1, 2014 at his home at The Villa at Baer Creek surrounded by his family. He was born in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands on July 18, 1927 and is preceded in death by the love of his life, Elizabeth Mensink-Bogers, who he married 60 years ago last July 30. He is survived by his four children, Rita Winmill (Ron), Pieter Mensink (Janice), Maud Christine Tanner and Jeanette Church, and by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Dolf loved his family very much, and enjoyed taking long summer vacations on the sunny beaches in the south of Europe with them. He had a passion for automobiles and enjoyed learning about cars and attending car shows in Europe and America.
He was an architect by trade and had a love of great architecture. One of his most treasured professional accomplishments was his post-World War II design for the restoration of a church originally drawn and built by his great grandfather in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands.
He often spent time on drives with his sweetheart watching for new and interesting construction. During construction of the LDS Conference Center in 2000, Dolf could often be found on a sidewalk downtown watching construction as it progressed. He kept journals containing his own sketches and dates when new beams or large items would arrive. Eventually, the project manager noticed him, and invited him on a private tour when the center was finished.
Dolf and his wife raised their children in a small town outside Rotterdam and moved to Salt Lake City in 1979, where they were active in the LDS Church. Genealogy became his passion after retirement, and he often worked on it from sun up to sun down. Fondly known as "Opa" in his family, wards and neighborhoods, a visit to Opaâs house always included lots of love, laughter, and stories about genealogy. Surely the harvest of his work for his ancestors through genealogy is happening now, as he meets those who went before him. We are happy that our Dad went home to his "Beppie," as he missed her very much.
To celebrate his life, services will be held Saturday November 8, at the Quail Crossing Chapel, 2230 South 350 East Kaysville, UT at 11:00 a.m. Viewing will be held on Friday evening November 7, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service. Burial services will follow at the Salt Lake Mausoleum, 1001 11th Ave, Salt Lake City, Utah
