Scott Mason

June 21, 1957 — January 13, 2017

Scott Mason died on a nice sunny day in Layton where he spent his last days on Earth. He was born in Fairbanks Alaska June 21st 1957 to Terri O'brien and Mort D. Mason. He was always very proud of his parents; his beautiful Mom was Miss Alaska in the 50's and his Dad was a Bush Pilot for years in the Alaskan bush. His Dad is a writer and wrote a few books about his adventures as a Bush Pilot, his Mom lives between Mexico and Reno and runs a boutique in Reno. Scott had 2 sisters Michele Blackman and Tamilin O'Brien.

Scott was a strong individual, even as a boy. He lived in Fairbanks for 7 years until he moved to Wisconsin where he later met his wife Marcia. Scott and Marcia moved to Colorado and gave birth to their first child Travis in 1982. Travis was his Daddy's boy and still was until the day he died. They worked together as partners in construction on and off for years.

Scott was an amazing athlete which helped him pick up his construction trades so easily. He water skied, snow skied, played league softball, weight lifted, played racquetball, rode horses, was a full contact kickboxer with an 8-2 record as an amateur and also a sport karate competitor for 20 some years. He was an amazing Karate teacher and blessed the lives of many in that role.

The family lived in Colorado for years where they hiked, camped,4 wheeled, skied, and enjoyed the mountains every weekend. Scott started his construction career as a wood framer in Snowmass Colorado and then met the Sandridge family and learned his drywall trade. (That was in 1982) He stayed with that company in Denver for a few years until we moved to Woodland Park Colorado.

Scott and Marcia both started to train in the Martial Arts in Wisconsin and continued that for the rest of their lives, with their children. The family moved to another mountain area in Colorado where he continued to expand his trade adding steel stud framing and worked on many projects in the Colorado Springs area. He loved his trades and was very proud of his expertise at what he did. He opened his 1st karate school in Woodland Park Colorado where Travis picked up the lifelong journey of the Martial arts at age four.

The family moved to Athol Idaho and welcomed Ayla Jo in 1990 in Coeur d' Alene. Ayla is still Daddy’s girl. We bought our first house in Athol, Idaho and other than working we still hit the mountains every weekend hiking, 4 wheeling, camping, and enjoying many beautiful lakes. Scott loved horses (His horse was named Cowboy) and competed in horse shows, he also opened our 2nd karate school in Athol Idaho where Ayla Jo picked up the arts at age five.  Idaho had many happy adventures we will never forget.

We lived in Idaho for seven years then moved to Salt Lake City area where Scott had a job offer to supervise with a large framing company. Scott and I parted ways around this time â€‹but stayed best friends.

Scott spent the next part of his life with his lifelong friend and companion Bonnie Kelson, they lived together on and off until she moved back to Oklahoma last year with her family. They enjoyed riding motorcycles, wave runners and watching movies every Sunday. They were close and amazing friends to the end and he always talked lovingly about her.

Scott is survived by his mother Terri O'Brien of Reno Nevada, father Mort Mason of Athens Tennessee, sister Michele Blackman of Reno Nevada, sister Tamilin O'brien of Lake Tahoe Nevada, son Travis Mason of Clearfield Utah, daughter Ayla Jo Mason of Clearfield Utah and granddaughter Abigail Hope Mason of Clearfield Utah.

In lieu of flowers, family would appreciate donations to help offset funeral expenses.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 11 am at Aaron's Mortuary,496 24th Street, Ogden, Utah.
