Wayne Lowell Shreeve

March 13, 1925 — August 1, 2013

Following a life lived well and long, Wayne passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1st surrounded by family. His legacy of positive thinking, working hard, and loving unconditionally will forever guide those whose lives were touched by this exceptional man. Wayne was the beloved husband of Colleen Moore Shreeve for 54 years before her death in September 2002. An involved and caring father, he felt his greatest success was his five children: Jodi (Jeff) Riley of Walnut Creek, California; Greg (Susan) of Ogden; Becky of Ogden; Chad (Diane J.) of Riverdale; and Staci (Tom) Weller of Bellingham, Washington. He was a teacher and playmate to his ten grandchildren -- Blake, Sean, Brooke, Amy, Shannon, Elizabeth, Bryce, Alex, Dharma and Maya -- and his 11 great-grandchildren. Wayne will also be deeply missed by his long-time and loving companion, Kathryn Barney. Wayne was born on March 13, 1925 in Ogden to Edgar T. and Portia Broadbent Shreeve. He attended Ogden public schools until he turned 18 and joined the Army, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He later received his A.A. from Weber State College. On August 27th, 1948 he married the beautiful Colleen, the love of his life. Always a good provider, Wayne enjoyed a long and varied career, working for Defense Depot Ogden, Ogden Dressed Meat Company, Junius R. Tribe Realty and Wardley's Better Homes and Garden, ultimately retiring from the Utah State Tax Commission. Wayne also valued community involvement and served at various times as president of the Utah State Public Employees Association, treasurer of the National Assembly of Government Employees, treasurer of the Weber County Democratic Party, president of the Navy League of Northern Utah, and president of the Defense Supply Association. Of course, Wayne was so much more than his professional accomplishments. He loved his family above all else and worked tirelessly to mentor, motivate, support, teach and love. Believing that the family who boats together stays together, the Shreeves all grew up waterskiing, fishing and camping. They were also enriched by his constant words of wisdom, fondly referred to as Dad-isms or Wayne-isms. So many qualities define this unique man -- positive, generous, friendly, hard-working, political, frugal, advisor, counselor, world traveler, dog-lover, bridge player -- but above all he lived his life with integrity and overwhelming gratitude. A Celebration of Wayne's Life will be held on Saturday, August 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the home of his son, Greg, 1867 East 4750 South in Ogden. All friends and family are invited to share stories, experience the love, and honor the legacy of this fine man. The family extends its special appreciation to Step Forward Hospice and Judy, Kathryn, Wayne, and particularly Sarah, for their extraordinary and compassionate care.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riley Family Scholarships, a fund established in 1999 by his daughter to assist young people who have overcome adversity, a cause Wayne fully supported. Donations may be mailed to: Riley Family Scholarships, c/o San Francisco Foundation, One Embarcadero Center, Suite 1400, San Francisco, CA 94111.
